Lake Mountain Resort – Victoria Australia

June 11th, 2010

If you are looking for chairlifts and well groomed down hill powder runs, Lake Mountain is not for you.  Similarly it is unlikely to attract those looking for the nightlife of Thredbo Village, or even Jindabyne.  However, if you are looking for a great place to do some cross country skiiing, or a place to introduce your children to snow and toboggans, the Lake Mountain Resort is a fantastic place to visit.

I’m sure I won’t do the place justice by rambling on about how great it is for a family full of children that have never experienced snow, but that is really what we got out of it. There are plenty of amenities including toilets, cafe, toboggan and ski equipment hire, ski lessons and more.

We were very lucky that it had snowed the night before we arrived, because the day before there was only one tiny patch of man made snow in the resort.  Early June is not the time to be heading to the snowfields, but we were lucky this time around.  As we were in the middle of a road trip, we were only staying for the day, and didn’t have sufficient clothing for anything too hardcore, so limited ourselves to a bit of walking and of course the toboggans.  As it turned out, an hour of walking up the hill and sliding down again was more than enough to tire everyone out (15mins for some of us!) and to ensure we were damp and very cold.

To top off the experience nicely, it snowed the entire time we were there.  It really was a beautiful experience.  The only downside is that the kids all want to try snowboarding and alpine skiing now.

I can thoroughly recommend Lake Mountain Resort as a great place to take the family for a bit of fun in the snow.  Significantly cheaper than a day at one of the established alpine resorts.  It is only a few hours from Melbourne, or even better still, stay in Marysville.  Just at the bottom of the mountain, about 22km away, Marysville was devastated by bushfires in February 2009.  The community is rebuilding, but they could do with all the business in town they can get.  Make a real day of your trip and teach the kids something about this wonderful community at the same time as seeing the snow.

Tin Can Bay – QLD Australia

May 12th, 2010

Tin Can Bay is on the coast of Australia’s mainland, just below the most Southern tip of the famous Fraser Island, a World Heritage listed site.  One of the real attractions of Tin Can Bay is its relaxed country feel and of course the water and beaches.  Being in a bay, the water is more protected and provides excellent conditions for boating and fishing.

Accommodation is readily available but there are a few times each year when things get a little busy.  The Seafood festival in September is one of those times.  We stayed at the Tin Can Bay Tourist Park.  It was comfortable and very reasonably priced.

For the explorers among you there are plenty of places to visit within short driving distance.  We managed to take day trips to Rainbow Beach and Maryborough and there are plenty of houseboat and charter companies operating from the marina.

There is a thriving fishing industry operating out of Tin Can Bay.  Prawns, fish and spanner crabs seem to be the most sought after prizes in this area and there are also a number of fishing charter operators.  I have had the fortunate opportunity to take a three day charter from Tin Can Bay on the FV Nightbeat.

Possibly the most memorable activity of the weekend, certainly for the children, was hand feeding a dolphin.  If you go to Tin Can Bay with children you just have to head down to Barnacles Bait and Cafe between 7.00 and 8.00am any day of the week.  The dolphins (only one turned up when we were there) normally come in at around 8.00am, but being wild animals it’s impossible to know exactly when.  You can buy fish to feed them with at Barnacles for $5.00 but I would get there closer to 7.00am to buy your fish.  It’s getting more and more popular and the lines can be a killer for those of us with little patience.

Tin Can Bay is a great place for a relaxing weekend that won’t cost the Earth.  The locals are friendly, there are all the shopping options you will need (I think it was a Super IGA) along with some nice cafes and restaurants.  Most importantly there are plenty of beaches and parks and an abundance of water.

Harrigan’s Irish Pub – Hunter Valley NSW

May 4th, 2010

Harrigan's Irish PubHarrigan’s Irish Pub is in the Pokolbin area of the Hunter Valley in NSW.  Nestled among some of the best food and wine outlets in this famous region, Harrigan’s offers the perfect setting to relax after a hard day of nibbling and swilling.

In contrast to the mediterranean styled fare that is synonymous with wine, Harrigan’s offers hearty English and Irish based meals.  Pizzas (with toppings such as black pudding), schnitzels, pies and steaks dominate the menu.  Prices are quite reasonable and the servings are enormous.  Kids meals were fairly basic and also included a drink and ice cream for dessert.

We visited on a weekend and the pub was alive with activities and entertainment for all ages.  Outside there was a jumping castle and play area for the younger children.  Live music played in the beer garden and there were a number of large screens in the sports bar with most football codes getting a run, along with the racing.  Of course there were Keno and TAB outlets as well.

After spending the morning in cruising the cheese, chocolate, wine, ice cream and cured meat outlets, Harrigan’s was the perfect place to relax and enjoy lunch.  The only problem was that we couldn’t get motivated again after the big lunch and ale chaser.  Thankfully the children were equally worn out and we retired to our accommodation for the afternoon.
