The School Professionals’ Forum

Each year Family Compass School Professionals Forum provides public and private grade school counselors, social workers and psychologists with opportunities for learning and professional growth.

Seminars of the Grade School Professionals Forum are guided by one or more Family Compass therapists, who discuss important challenges that school professionals encounter in their work. The training emphasize designing and implementing interventions in schools that support children with social-emotional, attention and learning challenges.

Although we are currently not affiliated with a continuing education institute, we provide attendees with certificates confirming participation in 1.5 hours of continuing education.  These seminars are provided free of charge.

Details for our second Forum meeting for the 2016/17 school year are as follows:

TOPIC:  Supporting Our Transgender and Gender Variant Students

DATE: Thursday, February 16, 2017

TIME: 1:15pm to 2:45pm

DESCRIPTION: At this forum, we will explore how to best understand and support transgender and gender-variant youth, and common challenges they may face, including coming out, gender transitioning, as well as potential emotional, social, and/or academic difficulties.

Our presenter is Dr. Shira Benhorin, a newer member of our staff

Dr. Shira Benhorin is a licensed psychologist in Virginia and Maryland who holds a doctoral degree in Clinical and Community Psychology from DePaul University. She specializes in working with preschoolers/children, adolescents, and families and treats a wide range of behavioral, emotional, and social concerns. She also specializes in working with children with feeding disorders, as well as with LGBT youth and families.

Dr. Benhorin takes a holistic and collaborative approach to therapy, working closely with clients, families, and other professionals to develop the most effective treatment plans. She uses empirically validated interventions including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), behavior management and modification, family systems, ecological systems, and mindfulness.

Consultation Group for School Professionals

As a service to our community, Family Compass offers a no-cost consultation group for counselors and school psychologists led by Dr. Moshe Shtuhl and Larisa deGraffenreid, LCSW.  The goal of this supportive group is to provide a forum to use the group’s collective wisdom for guidance regarding work with children and ie psychological challenges, understanding problems and generating effective solutions.  This group meets approximately every other month.  This is a closed small group with limited availability.
